A tsunami advisory has been issued for several ports in southern Japan following a powerful offshore earthquake that struck the Kyushu region. The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 6.9, occurred off the coast of Kyushu and has been recorded as Shindo 6- on the Japanese intensity scale, indicating severe shaking.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued the tsunami advisory for ports in Miyazaki, Kochi, Ehime, Kagoshima, and Oita prefectures. The advisory warns of potential coastal flooding and heightened sea levels in these areas as a precautionary measure.
The earthquake struck the Kyushu region, known for its seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. The magnitude 6.9 tremor, which occurred at a depth of approximately 30 kilometers, caused significant shaking across the southern part of Japan, prompting immediate safety measures and emergency responses.
In response to the advisory, local authorities have been mobilizing resources to monitor coastal areas and ensure the safety of residents and maritime activities. Ports and harbors in the affected regions are under heightened alert, with precautionary measures in place to mitigate any potential impact from the tsunami.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has urged citizens to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities. “Our priority is to ensure the safety of all residents in the affected areas. We are coordinating with local officials and emergency services to address the situation promptly,” Kishida said in a statement.
The earthquake and subsequent tsunami advisory have disrupted normal operations in the region, with several ferry services and maritime activities temporarily suspended as a precaution. Authorities are conducting damage assessments and providing updates on the situation as it develops.
The Japanese government has also activated its disaster response teams to provide assistance and support to affected communities. The National Police Agency and Japan Coast Guard are working to assess the situation and ensure that any necessary evacuations and safety measures are carried out effectively.
