Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan addressed the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) today, highlighting the profound global disruptions currently unfolding and the resultant opportunities for India’s defence manufacturing sector. Speaking at a high-profile event in Delhi, Gen. Chauhan underscored the complex challenges and transformative changes impacting the world.
“I believe we are passing through an era of big global disruptions,” stated Gen. Chauhan. “It is technological, economic, climate change, migration of people, peace, and security. There are conflicts in Myanmar, Sudan, and Congo. The war may have settled down in Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Armenia, but lasting peace is still elusive. The world is in its most violent phase since World War II.”
Gen. Chauhan highlighted the impact of these disruptions on global supply chains, particularly in the defence sector. “Global supply chains are being affected, and there is a gap between demand and supply in defence supplies. These disruptions have given us an opportunity.”
He commended FICCI for its pivotal role in addressing these challenges. “I am happy that FICCI has been focusing on it. FICCI has been an important bridge, contributing to synergizing the efforts of various stakeholders in defence manufacturing. They have also boosted ‘Atmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) and ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’ (collective effort, inclusive growth).”
The CDS’s remarks come at a crucial time as India seeks to strengthen its defence capabilities amidst global uncertainties. The emphasis on self-reliance aligns with the government’s broader strategic objectives of reducing dependency on foreign defence imports and fostering indigenous production.
FICCI’s efforts in the defence sector have been instrumental in promoting collaboration between public and private entities, enhancing India’s defence manufacturing infrastructure, and supporting innovation.
Analysts view Gen. Chauhan’s address as a call to action for the industry to capitalize on the current global scenario to advance India’s defence preparedness and economic resilience. “His insights reflect a strategic vision that integrates national security with economic development,” said defence analyst Dr. Rajiv Sharma.
