Tata International plans major increase in sustainable leather production by 2028

Tata International plans to boost its sustainable leather production to 50% in the next four years, up from 27%.

Tata International, the global trading and distribution arm of the Tata Group, has unveiled plans to significantly enhance its sustainable leather production. The company aims to increase the share of sustainable leather in its production to 50% within the next four years, up from the current 27%. This moves underscores Tata International’s commitment to advancing eco-friendly practices in the leather industry.

A key component of this initiative is the introduction of Phoenix Leather, an innovative, eco-friendly product under the company’s Earthcare Leather range. Phoenix Leather has been developed through a patented collaboration with the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), marking a notable advancement in sustainable leather technology. This product represents Tata International’s effort to lead the industry in sustainable development and innovation.

P Rajasekaran, Business Head – Finished Leather Business at Tata International, highlighted the company’s optimism despite the challenges faced during the post-Covid period. He noted that there is growing interest from major markets, including the USA, China, and Europe, signaling a recovery in the leather market. For the financial year 2023-2024, Earthcare leather accounted for 27% of Tata International’s total production. The company’s target to elevate this figure to 50% reflects its strategic focus on sustainable and bio-based leather solutions.

Tata International operates one of India’s largest leather production facilities in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, where the Earthcare Leather range is manufactured. The facility provides employment to over 750 workers, demonstrating Tata International’s commitment to sustainable practices and local job creation.

The introduction of Phoenix Leather and the expansion of the Earthcare Leather range align with global trends towards sustainability and eco-friendly materials. Tata International’s focus on increasing the share of sustainable leather in its production is a strategic response to growing market demands for environmentally responsible products. As global markets recover, Tata International is well-positioned to capitalize on the renewed interest and drive growth in the sustainable leather sector.
