UN Special Rapporteur condemns ongoing violence in Gaza as genocide. She blamed impunity for Israel’s actions for the crisis. The judgment came amid tensions mounting casualties and calls for immediate international intervention to deal with the humanitarian disaster.
The UN Special Rapporteur, Francesca Albanese, on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories strongly criticized the Israeli government and called the prolonged conflict and violence in the Gaza Strip genocide. Albanese emphasized that the continued lack of accountability for Israel’s actions has allowed the situation to deteriorate to an extreme point where Palestinian suffering has reached unprecedented levels.
In a detailed report sent to the UN Human Rights Council, the Albanians highlighted systematic violations of human rights and international law by Israeli forces. She cited indiscriminate bombing, blockades and severe restrictions on movement and access to vital resources as evidence of a calculated campaign to inflict as much suffering as possible on the civilian population of Gaza.
“The current situation in the Gaza Strip is a direct result of the failure of the international community to hold Israel accountable for its actions,” Albanese said. “The continued blockade, combined with repeated military attacks, has turned Gaza into an open-air prison where the civilian population is collectively punished.”
The report comes at a time of the most serious violence in the Gaza Strip in recent years. In recent months, Israel’s intensified airstrikes have resulted in significant casualties, including many women and children. The destruction of infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and homes, has already worsened the humanitarian situation and left thousands without necessities.
Albanians demand immediate international action to resolve the crisis and the implementation of measures to ensure accountability for the violations committed. She called on the UN and member states to impose targeted sanctions and support efforts to bring those responsible for war crimes to justice through international legal mechanisms.
“The international community must not stand aside when the population is systematically oppressed and their basic human rights are denied,” emphasized Albanese. “There must be a concerted effort to end the culture of impunity that has allowed this genocide to flourish.”
