Wylfa Power Plant: Japan’s Hitachi scraps UK nuclear project

This announcement is the latest blow to the United Kingdom’s ambitions on climate change as it aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by the year 2050.

Hitachi has pulled the plug on its nuclear power station project at Wylfa in Wales, saying “the investment environment has become increasingly severe due to the impact of COVID-19.”

Thousands of jobs were expected to be generated at the operation in Wylfa Newydd in Anglesey. The project was put on hold last year after the company did not find any investors, and today Hitachi confirmed it would not be going ahead.

The company’s formal announcement is the latest blow to the United Kingdom’s ambitions on climate change as it aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by the year 2050.

While describing the decision as “disappointing,” a UK government spokesperson said it was open to discussing new nuclear projects with any viable companies and investors that are willing to develop sites in the United Kingdom, including in North Wales.
