The Democrat Prosecution team on Tuesday opened Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial with a very disturbing video of the attempted insurrection of the US Capitol building on January 6. The video also featured former President Trump giving calls to a rally crowd and asking them to march to the iconic building and “fight like hell”.
Trump’s defence team in retaliation said that these remarks made by the Former President were safeguarded by the First Amendment and insisted that he cannot be convicted as a former president.
Throughout the trial, however, it was very evident that the prosecution had an upper-hand as even the Senators who have backed Trump were visibly disturbed and many of them remarked that lawyers would not prove useful in this case.
In his opening speech, Representative Jamie Raskin, D-Md said, “That’s a high crime and misdemeanour, and if that’s not an impeachable offence, then there’s no such thing.”
The very emotional presentation by Democrats was presented to the same Senators (who were acting as jurors), many of whom had fled for safety themselves the day of the attack.
The trial began with the Democratic House’s members making traumatizing recollections from the day of the Capitol siege as they described police officers attacked in the chaos and rioters parading and causing damage in the very same room where the trial was being held.
The Democrat’s impeached the president very quickly, one week after the attack which had resulted in five deaths, including a woman shot by police inside the building and a police officer who succumbed to his injuries the next day.
