In a recent message, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of a rise in racism since the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Violence Based on Religious Belief, Mr Guterres asserted the pandemic has been accompanied by “a surge in stigma and racist discourse vilifying communities and assigning blame.”
The UN Chief also mentioned in his address some of the disturbing examples of discrimination against religious minorities, such as attacks on people because of their religion or beliefs, hate crimes among others.
In order to counter this discrimination, the UN Secretary-General called for more action to address the root causes of intolerance and discrimination.
