SoftBank will reportedly sell the UK’s Arm Holdings to US chip company Nvidia for over $40bn, a few years after its founder Masayoshi Son bought the chip designer.

Sources revealed a cash-and-stock takeover of Arm Holdings by Nvidia may be announced as soon as possible, and that SoftBank will become the largest shareholder in the US chip company.

Nvidia, known for its graphics chips, also developed for other markets including AI, self-driving cars, and data centres.

For the American multinational technology company, this deal will further consolidate the company’s position at the centre of the semiconductor industry.
