Russia’s state-owned energy company, Gazprom, announced the cessation of gas exports to Europe via Ukraine as of 08:00 Moscow time on January 1, 2025. The decision follows the expiration of the five-year gas transit deal between the two countries.
The end of this transit route marks a significant development in the energy dynamics between Russia and Europe, closing a corridor that has been operational for decades. Gazprom cited Ukraine’s refusal to extend the agreement, stating, “Gazprom was deprived of the technical and legal ability to supply gas for transit through the territory of Ukraine.”
This decision comes amidst strained relations that escalated after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the outbreak of military conflict in Ukraine in 2022. The European Union has increasingly sought to reduce its reliance on Russian energy by diversifying its sources.
While the Ukrainian route is now closed, Russia continues to export gas to Europe via the TurkStream pipeline, which runs under the Black Sea.
