On Sunday, 20th September, the regulations surrounding the use of Chinese Apps in the United Stated will be announced. The apps are being banned because they pose a threat to the citizens and their privacy as per the Trump administration.
In a statement to Reuters, US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said, “we have taken significant action to combat China’s malicious collection of American citizens’ personal data, while promoting our national values, democratic rules-based norms and aggressive enforcement of US laws and regulations.”
The apps most affected by this crackdown will be WeChat by Tencent Holdings and TikTok by ByteDance.
While Tencent is renaming WeChat Work to WeCom, Byte Dance is rushing a deal with Oracle ahead of the ban to limit the damage done to the apps in the States.
While the ban will force US citizens to look for alternatives for these very popular apps, it has been reported the American companies will be allowed to deal with the apps outside of the United States.
Big news for anyone involved w/ China: Trump moves ahead w/ ban on WeChat and TikTok, the popular Chinese apps. US officials say WeChat will be inoperational in US by Monday. This will force Americans & Chinese to look for other communications channels. https://t.co/j2ELjqkeEF
