Kenya freezes assets of 9 individuals to choke funding of Al-Shabaab

Kenya’s Interior Ministry has frozen funds as well as assets of nine individuals and entities, including Halima Adan Ali, Waleed Ahmed Zein, Muktar Ibrahim Ali, as part of the East African country’s comprehensive counter-terrorism strategy.

The government stated terrorism remains the “single biggest threat” to global peace and security.

“Kenya now faces blatant, increasingly complex and evolving terror threats, particularly from Al-Shabaab, whose aim is to attack, destabilize and disrupt our way of life,” the statement read.

The only way to deny terrorists the means to threaten our way of life is to choke their facilitation networks, and with this move, they can no longer finance Al-Shabaab’s operations, the government said.

Al-Shabab is one of Africa’s deadliest Islamic extremist groups that primarily operates from Somalia in the Horn of Africa, carrying out lethal attacks and bombings in Somalia and the neighbouring countries.
