Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced it attacked the fuel oil tanker Aqua One in the Gulf, claiming the vessel chartered to QatarEnergy was hit in Qatari territorial waters early on April 1, 2026.
Qatar’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that three cruise missiles were launched from Iran toward Qatari waters. Qatari air defences intercepted two missiles, while the third struck the Aqua One approximately 17 nautical miles north of Ras Laffan Industrial City.
No Injuries or Environmental Impact
QatarEnergy stated the 21-member crew was safely evacuated with no injuries reported. The company confirmed only minor damage to the tanker’s hull above the waterline and no environmental spill or pollution from the incident.
The strike marks a serious escalation as Iran extends retaliatory actions directly into the territorial waters of a Gulf Cooperation Council member state. It follows repeated Iranian threats against US-allied energy infrastructure and shipping in the region.
Heightened Maritime Risks
Qatar and other Gulf nations condemned the missile launches. International shipping companies and insurers have raised alerts for vessels operating in the Gulf amid the widening Middle East conflict.
The incident adds to concerns over the security of critical energy routes and could further disrupt oil and gas flows from the region. The US and its allies continue monitoring developments closely as tensions remain high.
