Tensions between Iran and the United States have sharply escalated after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned that the strategic Strait of Hormuz would be completely shut if U.S. President Donald Trump follows through on threats to target Iranian energy infrastructure.
In a statement released on Sunday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said any attack on the country’s energy facilities would trigger a decisive response, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz — a critical global oil transit route through which a significant portion of the world’s crude supply passes.
The warning comes just a day after Trump issued a strong ultimatum, stating that the United States would “obliterate” Iran’s power plants if Tehran failed to fully reopen the Strait within 48 hours. His remarks signal a dramatic shift in tone, especially after earlier comments suggesting a possible de-escalation in the ongoing conflict, now entering its fourth week.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also expanded their threats beyond direct retaliation. The statement warned that companies with U.S. ownership or shares could face destruction if Iranian energy infrastructure is targeted. Additionally, Tehran indicated that energy facilities in countries hosting U.S. military bases would be considered “lawful targets,” raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, remains one of the most strategically vital chokepoints in the global energy market. Any disruption in the waterway could have immediate and severe consequences for oil prices and international trade.
