A senior US official has disclosed that Iran rejected core American demands during the marathon US-Iran peace talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, leading to the complete failure of negotiations and the departure of the US delegation without any agreement.

According to the official, Iran refused to:

  • End its uranium enrichment program
  • Dismantle its major enrichment facilities
  • Stop funding Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis
  • Fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping

These rejections formed the main stumbling blocks in the nearly 21-hour trilateral talks mediated by Pakistan.

Why the US-Iran Talks Failed: Details from Senior Official

The high-level negotiations, which began early Saturday and extended deep into the night, involved Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner on the US side. They met with Iranian representatives including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir playing key mediating roles.

Trump Administration’s Strong Response

President Donald Trump reacted swiftly on Truth Social, announcing that the US Navy will immediately begin a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. He described Iran’s actions as “world extortion” and warned that the US military is “fully locked and loaded”, ready to take further action if necessary.

Trump reiterated his long-standing position: “Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.” He also instructed the Navy to destroy mines laid in the strait and interdict vessels paying illegal tolls to Iran, threatening that any Iranian forces firing on US or peaceful vessels would be “blown to hell.”
