In a show of strong protest, Iran’s foreign ministry summoned the Danish ambassador to Tehran, Jesper Vahr, on Saturday following a highly controversial incident in Copenhagen. The far-right group Danske Patrioter was involved in an act of desecration against the Holy Qur’an by setting it on fire on a square near the Iraqi Embassy.
The director-general of the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Western Europe Department expressed the Islamic Republic’s outrage during the meeting with Ambassador Vahr. The official criticized the passive stance adopted by European governments in the face of such provocative acts, emphasizing that burning sacred texts can never be justified under the pretext of freedom of expression.
“The act of burning sacred texts is reminiscent of the dark ages of ignorance… Silence in the face of such a heinous cultural crime will only lead to violence and promotion of terrorism,” stated the senior foreign ministry official.
The incident has triggered widespread concerns in Iran and across the Muslim world, with many expressing their indignation over the deliberate act of desecration. The Iranian Foreign Ministry stressed the urgent need for accountability for both the perpetrators and governments that allow such actions to take place.
“We believe that if the Danish government had acted responsibly and effectively in the face of insults to Islamic sanctities, we would not have witnessed such an offensive act today,” the official added.
In response, Ambassador Jesper Vahr expressed regret over the incident and informed Iranian authorities that Denmark’s foreign minister had already condemned the desecration of the Holy Qur’an. He further emphasized that disrespect for other religions is considered shameful, and the Danish government has distanced itself from such provocative actions aimed at creating divisions.
The Danish ambassador assured Iran that their concerns would be promptly conveyed to officials in Copenhagen. While the incident has already strained relations, both countries aim to address the issue through diplomatic channels and seek measures to prevent such offenses in the future.
Tensions surrounding the incident highlight the need for respectful and sensitive handling of religious symbols and beliefs. With growing concerns about religious intolerance, it is imperative for governments worldwide to address these issues with the utmost care and respect to foster a global environment of harmony and understanding.
