On Saturday, South Korea held talks with China’s top diplomat over a host of issues, including bilateral trade, denuclearisation and the COVID-19 response.
Yang Jiechi, a member of the Communist Party Politburo, met with South Korea’s new national security adviser, the South Korean government said.
This is the first visit by a high-level Chinese official since the Coronavirus pandemic erupted last year.
Both countries discussed topics such as expanding cultural exchanges, accelerating free-trade agreement negotiations as well as the election of the World Trade Organization’s Director-General.
The talks come after the COVID-19 pandemic had stalled denuclearisation negotiations involving the country of North Korea.
