Federal Bureau of Investigation conducts investigation into Twitter hacking and BITCOIN scam

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is conducting an inquiry into the twitter account hacking which led to a cryptocurrency fraud. The agency’s San Francisco office is leading the investigation after an alarm raised by various lawmakers in Washington.

The news agency Reuters reports that the hackers first took over the twitter accounts of celebrities and then appealed for donations. The donations were invited in the form of Cryptocurrency. It is however, not clear whether an inquiry is also being conducted in Twitter as FBI refused to answer any questions on those lines.

To its defence, the company has assured that it had been locking accounts of the users who had changed passwords in the last one month. “We believe only a small subset of these locked accounts were compromised”, stated the company in an official address.

Meanwhile, a united front can be seen between Republicans and Democrats on this issue as officials from both the parties urge Twitter to hold accountability and explain the reason behind this incident. The US Senator Richard Blumenthal, a democrat, rebuked twitter in a statement for its “repeated lapsed security and failure to safeguard accounts”.

At the same time, Republican Jim Jordan, highlighted the possibility of such an event happening on November 2, just a day before the US presidential elections. He expressed his worry on this repercussions of such a situation.

In this recent cyber attack, some of the victims have been the twitter accounts of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Kanye West and Kim Kardarshian and even Tesla’s Elon Musk. The twitter accounts of these personalities were hacked on Thursday and the hacker tweeted, offering $2000 for every $1000 invested in an anonymous BITCOIN account.

As per NDTV, the publicly available BITCOIN records show that the total amount received in the fraud was $100,000 in the form of cryptocurrency.
