Locals have reported that there have been at least 20 explosions at the Abadan oil refinery and petrochemical complex located in southwest Iran; these reports confirm that the ongoing war with Iran has opened its potential assault on Iran’s critical energy infrastructure assets.
The Abadan Oil Refinery is one of the oldest and historically important oil refineries in Iran and provides fuel supply and distribution services. If there are sustained attacks on the Abadan Oil Refinery, Iran’s capability of producing and delivering petroleum products to domestic markets will be further limited, resulting in declining domestic energy supply, in addition to what is already a very poor condition of energy supply in Iran.
There has been no official statement from Iranian authorities or a confirmation of the number of casualties or what has caused the explosions, thus far, from the Iranian Government authorities. At this time, it is still unclear if Israeli or other American Airstrikes, missile interceptors, or secondary explosions from prior explosion damage caused the explosions in Abadan.
Making Israel’s military operation against Iranian oil/gas supplies by bombing locations of Iranian Energy Related Infrastructure follows a pattern that has occurred over the last 4 weeks where both the U.S. and Israel have conducted numerous and systematic military attacks against Iranian Energy Related Critical Infrastructure; including Iran’s Oil/Natural Gas Storage Facilities in Tehran; multiple U.S. attacks have been conducted on South Pars Oil Field/Gas Field; as well several attacks have also been conducted on multiple facilities located adjacent to Iranian refineries (not just the oil refineries themselves) that are all part of a larger operational strategy to decrease or eliminate Iran’s Economic and Military Sustaining Capabilities.
Based upon the historical significance of Abadan, and as being the city where the Modern Iranian Oil Industry was founded, an attack by the Israeli’s on Abadan would represent one of the most strategically, tactically, and operationally significant Military Targets attacked by Israel during this current conflict.
