A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck the ocean south of the Fiji Islands late Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The seismic event occurred at 8:03 pm UTC at a depth of 174 kilometers (approximately 108 miles), placing it within the category of a deep-focus earthquake.
The epicenter was located in the South Pacific region, south of the Fiji archipelago. Despite its strength, the considerable depth at which it occurred significantly reduced the likelihood of surface-level damage or strong shaking in nearby populated areas.
There have been no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage. Importantly, authorities have not issued any tsunami warnings for surrounding landmasses, and the situation is being closely monitored.

Deep earthquakes like this tend to have a more limited impact at the surface compared to shallow quakes. The USGS continues to observe the area for any aftershocks or secondary seismic activity.
Fiji lies in the seismically active Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity due to tectonic plate boundaries.
