It’s Right Versus Liberal in Poland

Being one of the emerging economies in central Europe, these elections, that, have been postponed by a month, hold a lot of precedence in the geopolitical equation of Europe.

Like any other election throughout the globe, the polish presidential election 2020, has been no different, as the election campaign has heated up in accordance with the changing situation. Keeping in touch with the global trend of rising populist right-wing oriented politics, Poland also seems to be moving in the same direction, as the incumbent, Andrzej Duda, in alliance with the Law and Justice Party (PIS), right-wing, nationalist party, which also happens to be the ruling party in Poland’s Semi presidential democracy, which unlike the system in the US, is reminiscent of the system in France.

Here, Duda unlike the initial expectations, reeling under the juggernaut of anti-incumbency, has almost made his way to power, as he fell short by 6.30 %, after procuring 43.7% of the 99.78% votes counted from reaching the required margin of 50 % vote.

His challenger and the current mayor of Warsaw, the capital of Poland, Rafał Trzaskowski, was in second place on 30.3. Trzaskowski, a liberal, will have final shot at the highest office in the land, as he enters the all-important second round of presidential elections along with Andrzej Duda. On the 12th of July, which happens to be fortnight from now,  has Trzaskowski’s task cut out, as he is up for the impossible

Duda, with time only gained his popularity, and turned the possible anti-incumbency wave on its head. He had been leading in most of the opinion polls, conducted before the initially scheduled election in the month of May. After the last-minute postponement of the voting, although the opposition had a month to change the tide, it ostensibly failed to do so.

These results also exhibit the perpetuating rise of right-wing politics throughout the world, as the liberal Civic Platform party led by Trzaskowski was fighting against a polarising and conservative and intricate campaign run by the Law and Justice Party and Andrzej Duda.
