Yemen’s Houthi rebels will not stop from attacking the Israel bound ships in the Red Sea, despite the United States announcing new maritime protection force to counter them, says a spokesperson for the Iran-backed rebel group.
“Even if America succeeds in mobilising the entire world, our military operations will not stop … no matter the sacrifices it costs us,” said Moahmmed al-Bukhaiti, a senior Houthi official, in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Al-Bukhaiti put forward the condition, that the attacks will only stop if Israel puts an end to its crimes in Gaza and allow food, medicines, and fuel to reach its besieged population.
The statement comes after U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced on Monday to protect trade in the Red Sea after the attacks forced shipping lines to suspend operations.
The Houthi rebels have waged attacks on more than dozen of ships in an effort to pressurize Israel to end bombardment on Gaza Strip.
Post the U.S. announcement, Houthi Major General Yusuf al-Madani said in a statement, “Any escalation in Gaza is an escalation in the Red Sea.”
