Yankees might trade for new pitcher after injuries shake up rotation

The New York Yankees are dealing with some big injuries to their pitching staff and may need to trade for a new starting pitcher to stay strong for the rest of the season.

One of their key pitchers, Clarke Schmidt, is out with an injury. Gerrit Cole will miss the whole season after having major surgery, and Luis Gil is still not fully recovered. Although Max Fried and Carlos Rodón have been solid, the team doesn’t have enough reliable backup options behind them. Gil’s return will help, but depending on less experienced pitchers like Cam Schlittler, Marcus Stroman, and Will Warren in the playoffs might not be enough.

Ryan Yarbrough is another option who has done well overall. Before his own injury, he had a solid 3.83 ERA in eight games and only gave up more than two runs once. Still, the Yankees might need another dependable arm, especially with the playoffs in mind.

There are a few good pitchers who might be available in trades. One name that stands out is Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins. Sports writer Stephen Parello pointed out that Cabrera has very similar stats to Schmidt. Both have made around the same number of starts, pitched close to 78 innings, and have nearly identical ERAs and FIP numbers this season.

Cabrera has had injury issues before and has never pitched more than 20 games in a season. But he’s still a valuable option, especially since he’s under team control until 2028, which makes him a long-term investment. That also means the Marlins won’t let him go easily, so the Yankees would likely have to give up a decent package to get him.
