The beloved Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> star Eric Dane, known to millions as \u201cDr McSteamy,\u201d is facing one of the most difficult battles of his life. The 52-year-old actor was recently seen in a wheelchair, leaving fans deeply saddened as he continues to fight ALS \u2014 Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a progressive and currently incurable neurodegenerative disease. Despite the diagnosis, Eric has vowed to keep fighting, expressing his determination to live life fully and courageously.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with People<\/em>, his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, opened up about the emotional toll the illness has taken on their family \u2014 especially their daughters. Eric and Rebecca share two teenage girls, 15-year-old Billie and 13-year-old Georgia, who are struggling to watch their father\u2019s health decline. \u201cI mean, it\u2019s heartbreaking. My girls are really suffering, and we\u2019re just trying to get through it. It\u2019s a tough time,\u201d Rebecca said, her words capturing the raw pain their family is enduring.<\/p>\n

ALS, often known as Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease, attacks the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, progressively weakening the body\u2019s muscles and eventually affecting the ability to move, speak, and even breathe. While there is no known cure, treatments can help slow the disease\u2019s progression and improve quality of life.<\/p>\n

Rebecca shared that the family is doing their best to stay strong and has been working closely with therapists to support their daughters emotionally. She emphasized that they\u2019re taking each day as it comes \u2014 focusing on love, family, and togetherness during this unimaginable time.<\/p>\n

The couple\u2019s relationship has also seen its own journey of resilience. Rebecca and Eric married in 2004 and built a life together over more than a decade. In 2018, after 14 years of marriage, Rebecca filed for divorce. But in 2025 \u2014 four years later \u2014 she quietly dismissed the divorce filing, just one month before Eric publicly announced his ALS diagnosis. The decision reflected a renewed bond and mutual commitment to face life\u2019s toughest chapter together.<\/p>\n

Eric revealed his diagnosis in April 2025 with a heartfelt public statement. \u201cI have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter. I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria<\/em> next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
