Matthew McConaughey has shared a surprising piece of advice for couples looking to strengthen their relationships: swap out a king-size bed for a smaller, cozier option.<\/p>\n
The 55-year-old Interstellar<\/em> star, married to Camila Alves McConaughey since 2012, explained to Fox News Digital that sleeping too far apart in a large bed can create unnecessary distance in a marriage.<\/p>\n \u201cI wake up one morning \u2026 I\u2019m looking over there, and Camila\u2019s like a football field away, man,\u201d McConaughey said. \u201cThen you go to bed at night \u2026 you want to snuggle up and \u2026 \u2018Well, we\u2019ve got to cover you up. Come about 12 feet, and I\u2019ll come 12 feet.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n He added: \u201cYou\u2019re like, man, this damn king-size bed is not good for the marriage, man. Get rid of that son of a b*tch.\u201d The couple now sleeps on a queen-size bed, which McConaughey says keeps them \u201cshoulder to shoulder\u201d and has had a positive effect on their marriage.<\/p>\n The actor also stressed the importance of nurturing a romantic connection while balancing parenting duties. \u201cYou\u2019ve got kids, so you\u2019re spending as much time being a good mother and father of them, but you also gotta make sure \u2026 this is our time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n McConaughey, who shares three children with Camila\u2014Levi, 17, Vida, 15, and Livingston, 12\u2014emphasized that setting a strong example for children is key. \u201cOne of the best examples you can give the kids of how to treat a woman or a man \u2026 is how you treat their mother and how the mother treats the father,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe only thing I ever knew I wanted to be was a father,\u201d he told PEOPLE in 2020. \u201cAnd it\u2019s remained the pinnacle for me.
