Two decades after it last aired, Brookside is coming back to screens in a very special way. The classic Channel 4 soap, which ended in 2003, will return as part of a historic crossover with Hollyoaks later this year. The timing is significant, as Hollyoaks is preparing to celebrate its 30th anniversary, and the special episode will act as both a celebration and a tribute.<\/p>\n
Brookside was a groundbreaking drama, famous for tackling social issues that were often considered too bold for television at the time. Hollyoaks later stepped in as Channel 4\u2019s continuing drama, carrying on that tradition of addressing difficult and relevant topics. Now, the two soaps will connect in an episode that honours their shared history and their creator, Sir Phil Redmond.<\/p>\n
The crossover will bring back some of Brookside\u2019s most iconic characters, though producers have not yet revealed exactly who will return. Executive producer Hannah Cheers described the episode as a \u201clove letter\u201d to both shows. She explained that Hollyoaks actually grew out of Brookside, using the same filming site and later taking over its sets. For her, the crossover feels like the perfect tribute to the roots of Hollyoaks and a chance to let fans revisit some much-loved characters.<\/p>\n
Cheers also revealed that writer Steve Hughes, who began his career on Brookside, has reimagined where these characters would be more than 20 years later. She said she is passionate about bringing them back for this special, and she hopes audiences will enjoy seeing \u201cold friends\u201d once again.<\/p>\n
Sir Phil Redmond admitted that looking back on Brookside brings mixed emotions, with fond memories of its success but also the sadness of remembering cast members who have since passed away. At the same time, he welcomed the crossover and joked about Brookside\u2019s famous storylines, including the infamous body buried under a patio.<\/p>\n
Filming is set to begin in September, with permission granted to use the original location in West Derby, Liverpool. The cul-de-sac where Brookside Close was filmed is now home to real residents, who have been invited to share lunch with the cast and crew when production begins.<\/p>\n
