Squid Game<\/em> director Hwang Dong Hyuk recently opened up in an interview with My Daily<\/em> on June 30 at a caf\u00e9 in Sogyeok-dong, Seoul. He shared his thoughts on Season 3, addressed ongoing fan theories, and cleared the air on rumors about a possible American adaptation of the hit series.<\/p>\n

Since its release in 2021, Squid Game<\/em> has become a major part of Korean pop culture and one of Netflix\u2019s most well-known original shows. Season 3 wraps up the story of Seong Gi Hun (played by Lee Jung Jae), diving deep into the consequences of his actions, the secrets behind the Frontman (Lee Byung Hun), and what happens to the few who survived the cruel games.<\/p>\n

During the interview, Hwang made it very clear that the story ends here. There are no plans for a Season 4. He explained that Squid Game<\/em> was always meant to follow the personal journey of one man. \u201cWith Seong Gi Hun\u2019s death, there is no more room for Squid Game<\/em> to come out,\u201d he said. This statement puts a final stop to any lingering hopes for another season.<\/p>\n

One particular moment from Season 3 got fans buzzing\u2014Cate Blanchett\u2019s brief but surprising cameo as a mysterious recruiter playing the classic Ddakji game. The scene reminded many of the early episodes of Season 1 and led to theories that the show was hinting at an American spin-off. Hwang admitted that he had once considered an alternate ending where Seong Gi Hun survives and ends up in America, witnessing another recruitment. That version could have left the door open for more stories, but the final cut went in a different direction. According to him, even though Gi Hun\u2019s journey ends, the organization behind the deadly games is still out there.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, rumors about an American version of Squid Game<\/em> have been spreading rapidly. Some international reports claimed that production would begin in Los Angeles this December, that Cate Blanchett would return in a leading role, and that director David Fincher might be involved. Some stories even said that Hwang himself would take part in the project.<\/p>\n

Hwang, however, shut those rumors down. He made it clear that he is not involved in the American remake and that he has not been officially contacted about it. \u201cIt\u2019s a completely groundless story,\u201d he said. \u201cI haven\u2019t heard anything about it myself\u2014I only know because I\u2019ve read articles.\u201d He added, \u201cThey\u2019re saying they\u2019ll start filming in December, that I\u2019m directing it, that Cate Blanchett is starring, and David Fincher is involved\u2026 but none of that is confirmed or true from my side.\u201d<\/p>\n
