Draymond Green has held it down at centre for years, and done it incredibly well, but the wear and tear is catching up to him. With Draymond now in his mid-30s, head coach Steve Kerr has made it clear: they don’t want him playing centre as much next season.

That’s why much of the Warriors’ offseason buzz has been about finding another big man.

Al Horford has been the name most tied to Golden State, but he hasn’t signed yet. And now, a new name is floating into the picture, Richaun Holmes, recently bought out by the Washington Wizards, is emerging as a backup option.

NBA insider Jake Weinbach reports that the Warriors are among the teams eyeing Holmes, especially if they can’t land Horford. Other interested teams include the Hawks, Heat, and Lakers, all looking to add depth in the frontcourt.

Holmes, while only listed at 6’9″, plays more like a true centre than most of the current Warriors bigs. He brings energy, rebounding, and rim protection, things the Warriors lacked at times last season. However, his recent seasons have been rocky. He’s barely played due to a mix of injuries and team fit issues, which naturally raises concerns.

Still, if Golden State misses out on Horford, or just wants an extra big body for the bench, Holmes could be a solid pickup, especially if it’s on a veteran minimum deal. He’s low-risk, and if he stays healthy, he could give them a valuable boost in the paint.

For now, all eyes are still on Horford. But if that doesn’t work out, Holmes could be the Warriors’ plan B, not a flashy move, but potentially a smart one.

The Golden State Warriors know they need more size down low.
