The U.S. carried out airstrikes targeting two facilities linked to militants back by Iran in Syria on Thursday, according to a statement by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, following a series of drone and rockets attacks against U.S. forces in the region.<\/p>\n
The statement claimed that the facilities were used by Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated groups.<\/p>\n
The strikes were carried out by a pair of F-16 fighter jets using precision-guided munitions, targeted a weapons and ammunition storage facility in Abu Kamal, located near border between Syria and Iraq.<\/p>\n
The strikes, ordered by President Joe Biden, were described as \u201cnarrowly tailored in self-defense\u201d and also noted that they are separate from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Austin also accused Iran of being responsible for the attacks. He promised further strikes if the attacks by Iran\u2019s proxies continue.<\/p>\n
During a briefing with the reporters, officials stated that they were aware of the people being present at the various points during the day, but were also aware they were not officials.<\/p>\n
