Spike Lee<\/strong> is back behind the camera \u2014 and this time, he\u2019s bringing his longtime collaborator Denzel Washington<\/strong> with him for their fifth<\/strong> film together. Their latest project, Highest 2 Lowest<\/em>, is a thought-provoking thriller inspired by the writings of legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa<\/strong>. The film will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival<\/strong>, with a theatrical release set for August 22, 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This marks a major collaboration between Spike and production powerhouses A24<\/strong>, Escape Artists<\/strong>, Mandalay Pictures<\/strong>, 40 Acres and a Mule<\/strong>, and Filmworks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Alongside Denzel, the cast is stacked: A$AP Rocky<\/strong>, Dean Winters<\/strong>, Jeffrey Wright<\/strong>, and Michael Potts<\/strong> are all onboard, promising powerful performances across the board.<\/p>\n

The story centers on a wealthy businessman<\/strong> (played by Washington) who finds himself at a moral crossroads, forced to confront how he\u2019s used \u2014 or misused \u2014 his wealth. As the title suggests, Highest 2 Lowest<\/em> explores the full arc of power, privilege, and the potential downfall that comes with chasing success without conscience.<\/p>\n

The newly released trailer by A24 gives a sneak peek into the emotional intensity of the film. It opens with Washington\u2019s voiceover:<\/p>\n

During an appearance at the Red Sea Film Festival<\/strong>, Spike Lee opened up about the influence of Akira Kurosawa<\/strong> on his work. He recalled how Kurosawa\u2019s storytelling, particularly in the film Rashomon<\/em>, shaped his own cinematic voice.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cOne of the best things about film school is that you get introduced to world cinema, not just Hollywood,\u201d Lee said.
\u201cSeeing Rashomon<\/em> inspired me to make She\u2019s Gotta Have It<\/em>. Kurosawa\u2019s work has influenced me since the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Rashomon<\/em> famously explored how different people can have completely different perspectives on the same event \u2014 a theme that clearly echoes in Lee\u2019s own storytelling. Now, with Highest 2 Lowest<\/em>, he revisits that inspiration through a fresh, modern lens.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on working with Lee again, Denzel shared his appreciation for their continued partnership:<\/p>\n
