Basketball icon LeBron James<\/strong> was all set to make his big debut at this year\u2019s Met Gala<\/strong>, but just hours before the red carpet rolled out, he dropped some disappointing news\u2014he won\u2019t be attending after all. The 40-year-old NBA superstar announced that a recent knee injury<\/strong> is forcing him to sit this one out, despite being an honorary chair<\/strong> for the night.<\/p>\n

Taking to X (formerly Twitter)<\/strong> on Monday, LeBron shared,<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately because of my knee injury I sustained at the end of the season I won\u2019t be able to attend the Met Gala in NY tonight as so many people have been asking and congratulating me on! Hate to miss an historical event!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

For those out of the loop, LeBron suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee<\/strong> during the Lakers\u2019 playoff game<\/strong> on April 30. It\u2019s not a minor bruise\u2014it\u2019s the kind of injury that needs serious rest and recovery. While fans were excited to see the basketball legend trade his jersey for some high-fashion couture, health clearly takes priority.<\/p>\n

But the James family won\u2019t go completely unrepresented at fashion\u2019s biggest night\u2014LeBron confirmed that his wife, Savannah James<\/strong>, will still attend on his behalf. So we\u2019ll still get a taste of their signature elegance on the red carpet.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Met Gala theme<\/strong> is \u201cSuperfine: Tailoring Black Style\u201d<\/strong>, celebrating the legacy and impact of Black menswear<\/strong> throughout history. The dress code, titled \u201cTailored for You,\u201d<\/strong> is a nod to individuality, cultural expression, and creative tailoring. It\u2019s based on the exhibition curated by Andrew Bolton<\/strong> and draws inspiration from the book Slaves to Fashion<\/em> by Monica L. Miller<\/strong>\u2014a deep dive into how Black style has evolved from the 1700s to now.<\/p>\n

Although LeBron won\u2019t be there, he was in incredible company. The co-chairs<\/strong> for the night include actor Colman Domingo<\/strong>, racing champion Lewis Hamilton<\/strong>, rapper A$AP Rocky<\/strong>, musician Pharrell Williams<\/strong>, and long-time Met Gala leader Anna Wintour<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The guest list is packed with big names like Simone Biles and her husband Jonathan Owens<\/strong>, Usher<\/strong>, Regina King<\/strong>, Angel Reese<\/strong>, Spike Lee<\/strong>, and Doechii<\/strong>\u2014all part of the official host committee<\/strong> for the night.<\/p>\n

The Met Gala<\/strong> isn\u2019t just about fashion and fame\u2014it\u2019s a massive fundraiser<\/strong> for the Costume Institute<\/strong> at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York<\/strong>. Last year alone, it brought in $26 million<\/strong>, but this year?
