Florence Pugh is drawing a line between acting and modeling, and honestly, she makes a solid point. In her new Who What Wear<\/em> cover story, the Oppenheimer<\/em> and Midsommar<\/em> actress opened up about the unrealistic and often frustrating expectations that come with being a woman in Hollywood, especially when it comes to appearance.<\/p>\n

Pugh got real about how baffling it is that actors are expected to double as runway-ready models, especially on red carpets. \u201cIt\u2019s so s**t,\u201d she said bluntly. \u201cIt\u2019s not the same thing. It\u2019s not the same thing at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reflecting on a conversation she had with a friend, she emphasized how absurd it is that red carpets are now considered a requirement for people whose actual job has nothing<\/em> to do with modeling. \u201cIt\u2019s just mental that red carpets are even an expectancy of someone that is not [a model],\u201d she said. \u201cThat isn\u2019t their job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Florence made it clear that she has deep respect for the craft of modeling \u2014 but she\u2019s tired of being held to the same standards. \u201cModels are good at being on a camera that is this close with that face, and they know how to show how raw their soul is on the flick of a switch. That\u2019s their talent,\u201d she said. \u201cTheir talent might go beyond that, but that\u2019s not what they\u2019re paid for. That\u2019s not what they\u2019re celebrated for.\u201d<\/p>\n

And yet, Pugh pointed out that actresses are constantly compared to runway models \u2014 even though what they do is completely different. When asked if modeling is similar to playing a role, she responded, \u201cIt\u2019s pretty opposite.\u201d For her, modeling is deeply exposing<\/em>: \u201cIt is you being beautiful, which is like everybody\u2019s inner hell.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also opened up about the emotional toll of public scrutiny. If a look doesn\u2019t land well \u2014 whether it\u2019s the fit, the styling, or just unsolicited body-shaming \u2014 she has to remind herself: This isn\u2019t even what I\u2019m here for.<\/em> \u201cIf I experience disappointment about how something looked or how someone talked about it\u2026 if I was too heavy for the dress, or too this or that \u2014 or whatever s**t someone wanted to say to me \u2014 I have to be like, \u2018Babe, this is not even why you\u2019re\u2026 This is not your job.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Pugh also touched on the evolving \u2014 and often frustrating \u2014 industry standards, including how auditioning now sometimes hinges on how many followers you have on social media. \u201cActors can\u2019t just be actors anymore,\u201d she noted, highlighting how much has shifted.<\/p>\n

Despite the pressure, Florence continues to blaze her own path.
