Ryan Coogler, the director behind Black Panther<\/em>, recently shared touching memories about working with the late Chadwick Boseman and the immense dedication the actor showed to his role as T\u2019Challa. Coogler, who is now working on a mystery-horror project titled Sinners<\/em>, spoke about the deep immersion Boseman had into the character, something that stood out even to the Disney executives visiting the set during production.<\/p>\n

Coogler recalled that, during filming, Boseman stayed in character by speaking in T\u2019Challa\u2019s African accent, and continued to do so even when the cameras weren\u2019t rolling. \u201cHe was talking in an African accent,\u201d Coogler shared. When Disney executives came to visit the set during week two of production, they were taken aback by Boseman\u2019s commitment to the role. \u201cThey pulled up and it was the T\u2019Challa accent and they were freaked out,\u201d Coogler laughed, adding that he had to reassure them, saying, \u201cDon\u2019t be freaked out. He\u2019s working, man.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coogler went on to explain that Boseman didn\u2019t \u201cturn off\u201d his accent until the film wrapped, showcasing just how deeply the actor embodied the role of Black Panther. This level of dedication, according to Coogler, was just part of how Boseman approached acting. The director reflected on how Boseman was an \u201cold school actor\u201d with a profound work ethic, and compared himself and Michael B. Jordan to \u201ckids\u201d in the presence of such a seasoned professional.<\/p>\n

Boseman\u2019s passing in 2020, at the age of 43, following a private battle with colon cancer, left a lasting impact on Coogler and others who worked with him. Coogler acknowledged the deep emotional and professional impact Boseman\u2019s death had on both him and Michael B. Jordan, emphasizing that his loss was felt not only as a colleague but also as a friend.<\/p>\n
