The New York Mets are off to an incredible start in 2025, building on their unexpected National League Championship Series run in 2024. Despite star outfielder Juan Soto having a slower-than-expected start to the season, the Mets have been propelled by a number of key contributors, with none performing better than homegrown slugger Pete Alonso.<\/p>\n

The four-time All-Star is putting up impressive numbers, slashing .337\/.453\/.635 with six home runs, 27 RBIs, and a 1.088 OPS\u2014currently the best in the National League. His outstanding start is making the Mets\u2019 front office look smart for locking him into a two-year deal worth just $30 million this season, with a $24 million player option for 2026.<\/p>\n

However, despite his red-hot start, team owner Steve Cohen recently confirmed that Alonso will almost certainly opt out of his contract at the end of the year and test the free-agent market.<\/p>\n

During an appearance on the New York Post\u2019s \u201cThe Show\u201d podcast, Cohen made it clear that Alonso would seek a new deal at the end of the season, saying he was \u201csupportive of\u201d Alonso\u2019s decision to explore the market. Cohen also mentioned that the Mets would \u201csee where it goes\u201d after Alonso opts out.<\/p>\n

Cohen\u2019s comments also left the door open for the Mets to re-sign Alonso after he hits free agency. \u201cHe\u2019s a great Met,\u201d Cohen said. \u201cIf we can work it out, but he\u2019s going to explore his market, and you know that\u2019s his right. It\u2019s hard to know how those things work out. I know we\u2019re happy with him. I believe he\u2019s happy to be a Met, and that\u2019s a good place to start in any future discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the Mets look to build on their strong start and aim for a deep playoff run, including a potential World Series title, Alonso\u2019s performance could play a significant role in negotiations when the time comes to work out a new deal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
