The internet loves a breakup rumor, and even America\u2019s favorite power couple isn\u2019t immune. For a while now, whispers have swirled about Michelle and Barack Obama\u2019s marriage hitting rocky ground \u2014 largely fueled by Michelle\u2019s absence at a few major political events (yes, including that<\/em> Trump inauguration). But Michelle\u2019s finally had enough, and she\u2019s set the record straight in classic FLOTUS fashion.<\/p>\n

Appearing on Sophia Bush\u2019s Work in Progress<\/em> podcast in April 2025, Michelle addressed the divorce chatter with grace and a healthy dose of real talk. \u201cWhen I say \u2018no,\u2019 for the most part, people are like, \u2018I get it,\u2019\u201d she said, referring to her decision to skip certain public events. \u201cBut they couldn\u2019t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself, so they assumed my husband and I are divorcing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michelle made it clear \u2014 her absences aren\u2019t signs of a crumbling marriage but of a grown woman finally choosing herself. \u201cThat was an important test for me,\u201d she said, \u201cjust as a woman and as an independent person.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for Barack? He hasn\u2019t chimed in directly about her latest comments, but he has<\/em> been candid in the past. On CBS Mornings<\/em>, he acknowledged their relationship hasn\u2019t always been perfect \u2014 especially during their years in the White House. \u201cLet me just say this: it sure helps to be out of the White House,\u201d he quipped, adding that Michelle bore the brunt of parenting stress while he was off running the country.<\/p>\n

Still, they\u2019ve weathered the storms. Michelle believes he was a good dad \u2014 maybe not perfect, but good. \u201cLooking back, you did okay as a dad,\u201d she once told him, and for Barack, that validation means everything.<\/p>\n

While they may no longer be side-by-side at every public event, it\u2019s clear they\u2019re still very much partners \u2014 just now with more independence, more freedom, and a bit more \u201cme time\u201d built in. And really, isn\u2019t that what a healthy, evolving marriage looks like?<\/p>\n
