The world\u2019s top female hockey stars<\/strong> are hitting the ice for the IIHF Women\u2019s World Championships<\/strong>, which kicks off Wednesday, April 9<\/strong> \u2014 and this year\u2019s action is heating up in a brand-new location.<\/p>\n

For the first time ever, the tournament is being held in Ceske Budejovice, Czechia<\/strong>. Over the course of 11 jam-packed days<\/strong>, fans can look forward to 10 days full of multiple games<\/strong>, all leading up to the championship final on Sunday, April 20<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Canada<\/strong> comes into the tournament riding high after snatching the 2024 title in dramatic fashion, edging out the U.S.<\/strong> in overtime during last year\u2019s final. The Americans<\/strong>, who last took home gold in 2023, are showing up with one goal in mind: redemption<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As usual, the big question is: Can anyone break the Canada\u2013USA stranglehold on gold?<\/em> Since the tournament began, Canada (13)<\/strong> and Team USA (10)<\/strong> have claimed every single gold medal<\/strong> \u2014 that\u2019s 23 in total. Finland<\/strong> is the only other team to ever crash the gold-medal game, finishing with silver in 2019 when they hosted.<\/p>\n

But keep an eye on the home team this year. Czechia<\/strong> has quietly become a force, winning back-to-back bronze medals in 2022 and 2023<\/strong>. With home-ice advantage, could they be the next big disruptor?<\/p>\n

      The 2025 IIHF Women\u2019s World Championships begin with the preliminary round on Wednesday, April 9.<\/p>\n

      Teams are split into two groups, Group A and Group B, and will compete in a round-robin format. That means each team plays every other team in its group once. The results from these games will determine which eight teams advance to the next stage.<\/p>\n

      The quarterfinals will be held on Thursday, April 17.
