The film will tell the story of the trailblazing musician often referred to as the \u201cGodmother of Rock and Roll,\u201d whose influence shaped the sounds of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond starring in the role, the <em>Good as Hell<\/em> hitmaker will also produce the film alongside Kevin Beisler and Significant Productions\u2019 Nina Yang Bongiovi and Forest Whitaker. Written by Natalie Chaidez and Kwynn Perry, the project is currently in development, as first reported by <em>Deadline<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The biopic will focus on a pivotal decade in Tharpe\u2019s life, showcasing her groundbreaking innovations, secret love affair, and enduring passion for music. Despite her immense contributions, Tharpe faced societal barriers, navigating both racial and gender-based discrimination while keeping her sexuality hidden from the public eye. One of her most iconic moments\u2014performing at a wedding-turned-stage show\u2014will also be explored.<\/p>\n<p>Lizzo celebrated the casting news on social media, writing, \u201cBlack people made rock n roll yeaaaah,\u201d alongside the announcement.
