Cynthia Erivo knows she\u2019s talented, but when it comes to playing one of Marvel\u2019s most iconic superheroes, she\u2019s going to have some competition. The Wicked<\/em> star has thrown her hat in the ring for the role of Ororo Munroe, aka Storm<\/strong>, but she\u2019s not the only one eyeing the part. Fellow Grammy winner SZA<\/strong> has also voiced her interest in wielding lightning as the powerful mutant.<\/p>\n

With the MCU\u2019s X-Men reboot<\/strong> on the horizon, could we be looking at a fierce battle for the role of Storm?<\/p>\n

SZA wants to play a \u201cGnarly\u201d storm<\/strong><\/h3>\n

During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show<\/em>, SZA revealed her deep love for comics, thanks to her father\u2019s collection of first-edition Marvel and DC issues<\/strong>. When discussing her dream superhero role, she first mentioned Silver Surfer<\/strong> but quickly pivoted to Storm, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that would be so gnarly if I could be Storm\u2019s origin story.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She\u2019s got the passion, but does she have the edge over Erivo<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

Cynthia Erivo has the experience to back it up<\/strong><\/h3>\n

While SZA\u2019s enthusiasm is undeniable, Erivo has a massive advantage<\/strong>. She\u2019s a two-time Oscar nominee, a Tony Award winner, and a powerhouse performer<\/strong>, currently starring in Wicked<\/em>, which has only amplified her star power.<\/p>\n

Erivo\u2019s acting range, vocal prowess, and commanding presence<\/strong> make her a formidable contender. She\u2019s already proven she can fly (literally) in Wicked<\/em>, and her fierce energy as Elphaba<\/strong> feels like a natural stepping stone to playing Storm.<\/p>\n

Who will ultimately win the role?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On one hand, Marvel Studios might consider SZA\u2019s massive social media following (23.1M Instagram followers vs. Erivo\u2019s 2.5M)<\/strong> as a factor. However, acting experience and proven ability to carry a major film<\/strong> will likely weigh heavier in the decision. If Marvel wants an origin-story Storm<\/strong>, they may go for someone fresh like SZA. But if they\u2019re looking for a seasoned actress<\/strong> who can anchor the X-Men\u2019s arrival in the MCU<\/strong>, Erivo seems like the obvious choice.<\/p>\n

That said, with the multiverse in play<\/strong>, who\u2019s to say Marvel won\u2019t throw a curveball and cast both<\/strong>? A world where multiple Storms exist<\/strong>, each bringing a different dimension to the character, isn\u2019t out of the question.<\/p>\n
