Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, who is currently incarcerated following multiple convictions for sexual assault, has been diagnosed with a serious form of bone marrow cancer, according to a report from NBC News on Monday night. The former producer is reportedly receiving treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) while serving his sentence at Rikers Island prison in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chronic myeloid leukemia, according to the National Cancer Institute, is a disease in which the bone marrow produces an abnormal number of white blood cells. This condition often arises during or after middle age, and though treatments are available, it is a chronic illness that requires ongoing care. Weinstein, 71, is currently undergoing medical treatment within the confines of his prison sentence, which has seen a series of health complications in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n

This latest health revelation follows a string of medical emergencies for Weinstein, who has been shuttled between Rikers Island and local hospitals since his incarceration. Last month, he underwent emergency heart surgery, where his representatives stated that he had been \u201crushed\u201d to Bellevue Hospital for a heart procedure. At the time, the spokesperson cited \u201cseveral medical conditions\u201d as contributing factors to Weinstein\u2019s deteriorating health.<\/span><\/p>\n
