Fariana, one of reggaeton\u2019s earliest female pioneers, is back with her latest album <\/span>Underwater<\/span><\/i>, offering a powerful reflection on her journey through the male-dominated genre. Born Farina Pao Paucar Franco in Medell\u00edn, Colombia, the 38-year-old Latin singer and rapper first rose to prominence in 2005 after placing third on Colombia\u2019s <\/span>El Factor X<\/span><\/i>, a reality singing competition modeled after Simon Cowell\u2019s <\/span>The X Factor<\/span><\/i>. However, it was her foray into reggaeton\u2014a genre led by male superstars like Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, and Wisin & Yandel\u2014that truly solidified her place as a trailblazer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fariana made history as one of Colombia\u2019s first female reggaeton artists with early singles like <\/span>S\u00f3lo con Palabras<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Ser\u00e1<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>Regresa a M\u00ed<\/span><\/i>. However, breaking into the male-dominated industry was not without its challenges. \u201cThere were a lot of people talking, and they didn\u2019t understand what I was doing,\u201d Fariana told <\/span>USA Today<\/span><\/i> in Spanish. \u201cA lot of people saying very negative things. But at the same time, it was easy to be the only one because I achieved this position with my talent and gained the respect of many men\u201d in the genre.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her latest album <\/span>Underwater<\/span><\/i> dives deep into both personal and professional growth. Fariana explores themes of resilience and empowerment, while still embracing reggaeton\u2019s infectious rhythms. For the artist, this album represents not just her own evolution, but also the shifting landscape for women in reggaeton.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the years, the genre has seen a wave of dynamic female artists rise to prominence, with stars like Natti Natasha, Becky G, Anitta, and Mar\u00eda Becerra leading the charge.\u00a0 Fariana said that the current female artists are opening path for the upcoming generation and she is proud to do so.<\/span>In 2021, she collaborated with Natti Natasha and other female emcees on the anthem <\/span>Las Nenas<\/span><\/i>, celebrating women\u2019s power and presence in the genre.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI feel very powerful when I have a woman by my side because together, we are more,\u201d Fariana added. \u201cWomen represent me in every way because I\u2019m sure that all of them have fought for the positions they have.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
