A Spanish retailer recently leaked details about a new 2024 edition of the entry-level Kindle (spotted by Good e-Reader), listing a release date of September 30. Although the listing was quickly removed, enough information surfaced to give us a glimpse of what’s coming.

If the leak is accurate, this upcoming 2024 Kindle—set to be the 12th generation—will feature a more eco-friendly design than previous models. The device is rumored to be made from 75% recycled plastic and 90% recycled magnesium. Additionally, Amazon seems to be revamping its packaging to make it 98% wood fiber from recycled or sustainably sourced materials. Another exciting detail from the leak is the new match green colorway, which looks quite striking.

On the technical side, the 2024 Kindle will sport a 300ppi screen, a typical feature for grayscale e-readers, but with 25% more brightness compared to the current 11th-generation model. Like its predecessor, the 12th-gen Kindle will support dark mode, and it promises faster page turns. It’s unclear if the speed improvement comes from a better processor or the adoption of the latest E Ink Carta 1300 screen technology. This new display, used in the 2024 Kobo Clara BW, enhances both readability and performance, which would make the Kindle a serious competitor.

The 2024 Kindle is also expected to come with 16GB of storage and an impressive battery life of up to 8 weeks—doubling the battery life of the 2022 model. The device’s dimensions will remain the same as its predecessor, at 157.8 x 108.6 x 8 mm.

What We’d Love to See in the New Kindle

There’s still some room for improvement in the new Kindle. One major upgrade would be the E Ink Carta 1300 display, which increases page responsiveness by 25% and adds better contrast. Kobo has already used this tech in its Clara BW model, and it’s a standout feature for legibility and performance.

Another feature we’d love to see is a color e-reader. Kobo already has two color e-readers, and it would be exciting to see Amazon step up and offer a color option to compete.

Adding adjustable warm light would also be a fantastic addition, as it’s already available on Kobo’s Clara BW model. It would enhance night-time reading while maintaining the Kindle’s affordable price.

Waterproofing is another feature that could set the 2024 Kindle apart. The current base model lacks the IPX8 waterproof rating that the Kindle Paperwhite offers, and it’s something we’d love to see on the entry-level Kindle as well.

Lastly, making it easier to sideload EPUB files without needing to use the Send to Kindle app would be a welcome improvement for readers who prefer more flexibility in managing their ebook library.

It looks like Amazon is gearing up to release a new Kindle e-reader soon, which could explain why the base…

[9
18940
post-55090","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech","tag-kindle
["GET
