Downs, who suffered an ankle sprain during training camp after a tackle from teammate Nick Cross, has been recovering and was initially seen using a walking boot and scooter.

Although Downs has made progress and no longer needs these aids, it’s unclear if he’ll be ready for the season opener against the Houston Texans. Colts General Manager Chris Ballard expressed cautious optimism but stopped short of confirming Downs’ availability, saying, “Hopeful. Making progress, but not ready to stamp, say he’s going to be ready Week 1.”

Downs was initially expected to be out for 4-6 weeks, which would align with a potential return by Week 1, but he might be more likely to come back closer to the end of that timeline. The fact that the Colts haven’t placed him on the Reserve/Injured list suggests they anticipate him being back within the first four weeks of the season.

Ballard might also be keeping his cards close to his chest to gain a strategic advantage over the Texans. Downs was a standout during camp and preseason, showing strong hands, precise route running, and good chemistry with second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson.

If Downs isn’t ready for the opener, rookie Adonai Mitchell is expected to step into the slot position, with Michael Pittman Jr. and Alec Pierce playing on the outside. Another rookie, Anthony Gould, could also see slot duties.

We’ll have a clearer picture of Downs’ status once the Colts release their official Week 1 injury report.

The Indianapolis Colts are gearing up for Week 1 of the regular season, but there’s uncertainty about whether they’ll have…

[45
15851
post-49611","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-american-football","tag-josh-downs
["GET
