Professional golfer Scottie Scheffler, currently a top player in the golf world, found himself in an unexpected and alarming situation on May 17. In the early morning hours, the 27-year-old was arrested and traded his iconic Masters green jacket for a neon orange jumpsuit issued by the Department of Corrections. The incident stemmed from a misunderstanding over traffic redirection near the Valhalla Golf Club, where he was scheduled to play in the PGA Championship\u2019s second round.<\/p>\n

Scheffler explained the situation on his Instagram Story, saying, \u201cThis morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I\u2019m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.\u201d He also expressed his condolences to the family of the accident victim.<\/p>\n

Scheffler was attempting to enter the Valhalla Golf Club amidst heavy traffic and a significant police presence due to an earlier accident that had tragically claimed the life of a pedestrian. ESPN\u2019s Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the event, described the arrest as \u201cvery quickly, very rapidly, and very aggressively\u201d executed, insisting that Scheffler \u201cvery clearly did not know what was happening in the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following his arrest, Scheffler was booked at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections and charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals. Scheffler\u2019s attorney, Steven Romines, defended his client, stating that the arrest was a result of a misunderstanding. Romines explained to reporters that Scheffler was merely following directions to enter the golf club. \u201cThey were directing traffic. He held his credential out and was going in like they\u2019d been instructed to,\u201d Romines said. He emphasized that Scheffler was unaware of the accident and was following protocol.
