As we celebrate Black History Month each year, the chosen themes offer a powerful lens through which we can examine the diverse and dynamic contributions of African Americans throughout history. Over the past five years, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) has carefully curated themes that not only celebrate achievements but also prompt important conversations about resilience, health, family, voting, and migrations within the Black community.<\/p>\n

  1. 2019: Black Migrations<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The theme of Black Migrations in 2019 explored the movements of African American populations across the United States and around the world. It highlighted the historical and cultural significance of migration, emphasizing the impact it had on shaping communities, identities, and the broader American landscape.<\/p>\n

    1. 2020: African Americans and the Vote<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      In 2020, the focus shifted to the crucial theme of voting rights and political participation. Against the backdrop of a significant election year, \u201cAfrican Americans and the Vote\u201d delved into the struggles and triumphs of Black individuals in their fight for the right to vote. The theme served as a timely reminder of the ongoing battle for electoral equality.<\/p>\n
