At the recent Gotham Awards, \u201cPast Lives\u201d emerged as the standout, securing the top accolade for Best Feature. Meanwhile, acting recognition went to Charles Melton for his supporting role in Todd Haynes\u2019 \u201cMay December\u201d and Lily Gladstone for her leading performance in \u201cThe Unknown Country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Upon accepting the award for Best Feature, writer-director Celine Song expressed her gratitude, stating, \u201cThank you, Gotham, for this award. It\u2019s such an honor. It really means the world to receive it with my debut set in New York City, a city I live in and love deeply.\u201d Song extended her thanks to her producers at A24, as well as acknowledging the contributions of her cast and crew. Joining her on stage were two stars from the film, Greta Lee and John Magaro.<\/p>\n
The lead-up to the awards saw Director Andrew Haigh\u2019s \u201cAll of Us Strangers\u201d as the frontrunner with four nominations across various categories. Celine Song\u2019s \u201cPast Lives\u201d and A.V. Rockwell\u2019s \u201cA Thousand and One\u201d followed closely with three nominations each. These dramas contended for Best Feature alongside \u201cShowing Up,\u201d \u201cPassages,\u201d and \u201cReality.\u201d In the Best International Feature category, nominees included \u201cAnatomy of a Fall,\u201d \u201cPoor Things,\u201d \u201cT\u00f3tem,\u201d and \u201cThe Zone of Interest,\u201d alongside \u201cAll of Us Strangers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Traditionally known for acknowledging independent films, the Gotham Film and Media Institute waived its $35 million budget cap requirement for potential nominees this year. Despite this, most contenders remained indie or arthouse productions, although larger-scale projects like \u201cBarbie\u201d managed to enter the race. Notably, the Gothams revamped their acting categories in 2021, removing gender specifications.<\/p>\n
