One month later, the numbers tell a very different story.<\/p>\n

New York City crime drops under Zohran Mamdani<\/h2>\n

New York City recorded its safest January ever for gun violence. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the city saw the fewest shooting incidents and shooting victims since records began.<\/p>\n

Homicides fell sharply. Just 12 murders were reported citywide during Mamdani\u2019s first month in office. That represents a 60% drop compared with previous years. Manhattan and Staten Island both went the entire month without a single homicide.<\/p>\n

Those figures are rare in a city of more than 8 million people.<\/p>\n

The decline was not limited to shootings. Burglary, robbery, auto theft, grand larceny, felony assault, and retail theft all decreased. Overall major crime fell by 6.7% compared with recent years.<\/p>\n

The drop comes despite ongoing concerns about public safety that dominated political debate during the election. For now, the feared surge in violence has not materialized.<\/p>\n

It is fair to question how much credit a mayor can claim after just a few weeks in office. Seasonal factors, including unusually cold January weather, may have played a role.<\/p>\n

Still, the data is clear. Violent crime is down. The city is calmer, not more dangerous. The apocalyptic predictions have not matched reality.<\/p>\n
