The Texas Longhorns women\u2019s basketball team has barely started conference play, and the pressure is already high. Their move to the SEC has quickly shown how tough the league can be.<\/p>\n

Most fans talked about Texas joining the SEC because of football. But the same level of competition exists in every sport. That includes women\u2019s basketball. Head coach Vic Schaefer is already frustrated with how the conference schedule has played out.<\/p>\n

Texas is in the middle of a very difficult road stretch. The team had to play at No. 12 LSU and then travel straight to face No. 3 South Carolina. Both games came in the same week. Texas entered the LSU game undefeated at 18 and 0 and ranked No. 2 in the country. They lost a close game 70 to 65.<\/p>\n

There was little time to recover. Their next game was immediately against South Carolina on the road. That is one of the hardest matchups in women\u2019s college basketball.<\/p>\n

After the loss to LSU, Schaefer did not hold back. He said the SEC schedule makers seem to have it out for Texas. He pointed out that Texas has had to face South Carolina and LSU more than most teams since joining the league. This season, Texas has to play both teams on the road. Even worse, those games came back to back in the same week.<\/p>\n

Schaefer said the league is already hard enough. He said putting his players in that position felt wrong. He added that he noticed the problem when the schedule was released. He waited for someone with power to speak up. That never happened. So he decided to say something himself.<\/p>\n

Texas had already beaten South Carolina earlier in the season at a neutral site tournament. That game did not count as a conference game. The SEC matchup still had to be played.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The schedule only gets tougher. From February 1 to February 15, Texas is set to play five ranked teams in a row. That stretch includes Oklahoma, LSU, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee. No other SEC team currently has that many ranked opponents in a single stretch.<\/p>\n

To be fair, Texas is not the only team dealing with tough runs. Other SEC teams also face back to back road games against top opponents. Still, Schaefer\u2019s frustration makes sense when looking at the full picture.<\/p>\n

Texas joined the SEC on July 1, 2024. This is only their second season in the conference. If they were still in the Big 12, their path would likely be easier.
