The same report suggested that the process should begin with Moldova, which borders Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, on Wednesday said, \u201cToday is a historic day, because today the Commission recommends that the Council opens accession negotiations with Ukraine and with Moldova.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\"Ukraine has completed well over 90% of the necessary steps that we set out last year in our report.<\/p>\n<p>On this basis, we have recommended today that the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EUCouncil?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@EUCouncil<\/a> opens accession negotiations.\"<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 President <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vonderleyen?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@vonderleyen<\/a> on the 2023 Enlargement Package. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StandWithUkraine?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#StandWithUkraine<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6sHIkuGATW\">pic.twitter.com\/6sHIkuGATW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 European Commission (@EU_Commission) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EU_Commission\/status\/1722253943223541958?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 8, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Von Der Leyen spoke the same the day as the report by the commission was released stating the accession should begin for it has been 18 months since Ukraine was accepted as a candidate state. The same report recommended the accession talks to begin with Moldova too.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has been long ambition to join the EU for more than decade.
