Foreign dignitaries have reached Kuwait to pay last respect for the death of emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah, who was buried earlier on Sunday.

Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, 83, succeeded his half-brother as emir. He also served as Kuwait’s day-to-day ruler during much of Sheikh Nawaf’s reign due to ill health.

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman were separately in Kuwait to meet Sheikh Meshal.

The Iraqi Prime Minister and Iranian Foreign Minister also offered their condolences. Iraq had invaded Kuwait in 1990 and occupied by Baghdad until 1991. The Gulf state still maritime border disputes with its neighboring countries.

Lloyd Austin, U.S. Defense Secretary, arrived on Saturday evening where he met Foreign Minister Sheikh Salem Abdallah al-Sabah and Defense Minister Sheikh Ahmed al-Fahad al-Sabah.

Jordan’s King Abdullah, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi also visited the OPEC oil producer. Kuwait has been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause.
