Windows 11’s latest major update, version 24H2, is causing trouble for some users, even before its full rollout. While the update is available for new Copilot+ PC devices, it has introduced a new feature intended to streamline the update process: checkpoint cumulative updates, also known as differential updates. This feature aims to make monthly updates more efficient by only downloading the parts of the update that are new or changed, rather than the entire update.

The checkpoint update, KB5043080, which is the first of these incremental updates, is already available for Copilot+ PCs. These new devices are designed to leverage advanced AI capabilities that are still under development. However, this new update process is not without its problems. Users have reported various issues after installing KB5043080, including stalled installations and rollback procedures. Some users are encountering an ‘Operation not supported’ error, and there have been complaints lodged on the Windows Insider Feedback Hub.

The issues appear to be primarily affecting PCs with certain Intel or AMD processors, particularly those who are installing the update manually, whether through the Windows Insider Program or using installation files from the Microsoft Update Catalog. While Microsoft has not yet addressed these specific problems directly, they have released a support document outlining potential issues related to the September 2024 Patch Tuesday update.

In the meantime, affected users are advised to manually resolve these issues by downloading and reinstalling update KB5043080 from the Microsoft Update Catalog. Following detailed instructions or using a special command line Windows tool is necessary to ensure the correct version is installed for their specific hardware.

Microsoft is expected to release an automatic fix to address these problems soon. As more users await the 24H2 update for their non-Copilot+ devices, it remains to be seen if Microsoft can resolve these issues swiftly and ensure a smoother rollout of Windows 11 version 24H2.
