The much-beloved isekai anime series, Overlord, gracefully concluded its fourth season in September 2022, leaving fans in anticipation for the adaptation of the final volumes of the original light novel series. Originating from the imaginative mind of Kugane Maruyama, who penned the Japanese light novel series beautifully illustrated by so-bin, Overlord expanded its universe to include both a manga and an anime adaptation. However, the fate of the series took an intriguing turn when Maruyama, in late July 2022, disclosed that the 18th volume would mark the end of the light novel series, leaving fans in suspense about the anime and manga adaptations.
A noteworthy detail in the series’ history is that the anime adaptation by Madhouse initially graced screens from July 7 to September 29, 2015, paving the way for three subsequent seasons. The fourth season, which concluded in September 2022, covered the light novel volumes 10, 11, and 14, leaving fans puzzled about the absence of volumes 12 and 13. However, the mystery surrounding these volumes will soon be unraveled with the upcoming release of the feature film adaptation titled “Overlord: Holy Kingdom,” slated for 2024. This cinematic venture will cover the Holy Kingdom Arc and incorporate the content from volumes 12 and 13, serving as a canonical sequel to Overlord anime season 4.
While “Overlord: Holy Kingdom” promises an exciting continuation of the series, it is essential to note that it will not be a 100% direct adaptation of the original light novel, as certain elements will be omitted. The burning question on fans’ minds is the potential return of Overlord with a fifth season. As of now, there hasn’t been an official announcement from Madhouse regarding the release of Overlord season 5, possibly due to their focus on the upcoming film.
However, optimism prevails as the positive reception of the first four seasons on platforms like Crunchyroll suggests that the production of the series might not conclude before season 5. Speculation arises from the fact that Madhouse has four light novel volumes at their disposal for a potential season 5, pending the release of the final two volumes of the novel series. While nothing is confirmed, it is plausible that Overlord season 5 could see the light of day in 2025 or early 2026, offering fans the closure they desire, unlike many series that meet an unfortunate premature end. Although a release date remains elusive, the prospect of at least one more season brings hope and excitement to the devoted Overlord fanbase.
